What are complete dentures?
Full dentures, or complete dentures, are a removable device that can be used to replace missing teeth. The denture teeth can be made out of porcelain or acrylic and are held together by an acrylic base. Partial dentures are similar but instead only fill the gaps of missing teeth, while a complete denture is a replacement for the full set.
Full dentures may be needed when you lose all of your teeth and they can help fill out your smile, and leave you feeling more confident.
How are dentures made?
What they're made of
Denture teeth are made with dental porcelain, a really strong ceramic, or acrylic, which is a durable resin. They're fixed in place on an acrylic base, which is then moulded to fit the shape of your mouth and gums.
The base of a denture is intended to mimic natural gum tissue and is made up of carefully pigmented acrylic to match the shade of your gums. The visible surfaces are highly polished to look as natural as possible.
Two parts, one set
Upper dentures tend to cover the roof of your mouth, while the lower denture is U-shaped to ensure there is enough room for your tongue.
How dentures stay in your mouth
Both upper and lower dentures are carefully shaped to rest comfortably on your gums, and suction helps to keep them in place. Denture adhesive can also help secure your dentures and help stop any food particles from causing discomfort, which can happen if they become trapped under the denture.
Getting used to life with dentures
It may take a little time to get used to your dentures, but your dental health professional will be able to advise you on what to expect.
Eating and speaking with your dentures may be a little difficult at first but with a little practice, you’ll be back to your normal self in no time.
To help keep your dentures in good shape, try and stick to a thorough daily cleaning regime. Removing them at night (unless told otherwise) will give your gums a rest and storing your dentures safely when not in use will help to maintain their appearance.
